Frequently asked questions
In what order should I sit the Operational Level exams?
You can sit E1, F1, and P1 in any order — CIMA does not prescribe a sequence. Most students sit the Objective Tests first, then sit the Operational Case Study (OCS) once all three are passed, since the OCS integrates knowledge from all three subjects.
Do I need to pass all three OT exams before sitting the OCS?
CIMA's recommendation is that you have completed E1, F1, and P1 before attempting the OCS, since the case study tests integrated knowledge from all three. You are technically eligible to sit the OCS before completing all three OTs, but this is not advisable.
How long does the Operational Level take to complete?
Most full-time working students complete the Operational Level in 9–18 months. Each OT subject typically requires 80–120 hours of study; the OCS requires significant preparation on the pre-seen material released ~6 weeks before the exam.
What is the pass rate for the Operational Case Study?
CIMA publishes pass rates after each sitting. The OCS historically has a first-time pass rate in the range of 50–65%. Strong preparation using the pre-seen material and practising under timed conditions significantly improves your chances.
Can I exempt from any Operational Level subjects?
CIMA offers exemptions from OT subjects based on prior qualifications. If you hold an ACCA qualification or a relevant degree, you may be eligible for exemptions. Check CIMA's exemption calculator on their website for your specific qualification.
What is the difference between E1, F1, and P1?
E1 (Managing Finance in a Digital World) covers the organisational and technology context of finance. F1 (Financial Reporting) covers preparation and interpretation of financial statements. P1 (Management Accounting) covers cost management, budgeting, and short-term decision-making. Together they give you a complete picture of operational finance.
